The name, “Memorial Hall” is an apt name. It is a historic reminder of Wilmington’s past. A building that for more than 100 years has represented and honored our past. Care should be taken when any alteration is undertaken. Something done in haste can be repented in leisure.
There is a plan to affix a 30’x14’x10’ structure on the rear of the building to support a heating and cooling unit. Although there is a need for these renovations, there is a growing consensus that the original design of the structure is “ugly” and would have compromised the integrity of this historic building.
As a member of the original Memorial Hall Committee and manager of the Craft Inn, I have always had a particular fondness for this grand old building. I made my objections known to the town maanager, Scott Murphy and he has taken my suggestions under consideration. I am encouraged that steps are underway to make some modifications in the original plans to make the proposed structure more in keeping with the historical integrity of the hall.
It is unfortunate this has taken so long to resolve and has been an inconvenience to some members of the community. That was never my intent. I hope there will be a solution that is satisfactory to all concerned.
