To the Editor,

On behalf of everyone at AbilityPLUS, the individuals with disabilities we serve, their families, friends, and the hundreds of volunteers who make our work possible, thank you to every person and every business in the Deerfield Valley who supported the AbilityPLUS Winterfest Fundraiser at Mount Snow. Winterfest at Mount Snow was a huge success, raising more than $25,000 in support of adaptive sports programs for people with disabilities.

Because of the generosity of the community, a child with autism has the chance to learn a new athletic activity in a nurturing, safe environment; a wheelchair-bound girl who would otherwise not be able to join classmates in her school’s weekly Mount Snow ski outing is able to leave her wheelchair behind for a day of independence, inclusion and fun.

So far this ski season AbilityPLUS has provided more than 1,000 lessons to hundreds of people at Mount Snow, and because of community support we’ll be able to expand the number of people we serve and broaden the scope of our programs throughout the coming year.

As an independent, nonprofit 501c(3) charitable organization, we rely on the generosity and commitment of donors and participants to make our annual fundraiser a success, and again this year Winterfest was just that. The dollars raised at Winterfest make possible our various programs at Mount Snow, including our Community School Program that provides Deerfield Valley school children with disabilities the opportunity to get out on the slopes with their classmates, and Soldiers For Soldiers, an adaptive sports mentoring program for veterans and members of the Armed Forces who have suffered life-altering injuries in their service to our country.

As this wonderfully snowy 2012-13 season eases into the long warm days of spring, I’d also like to thank Mount Snow general manager Kelly Pawlak who supports and values AbilityPLUS’ presence at Mount Snow. Thank you to everyone at Mount Snow, from management staff to lift operators who every day accommodate and appreciate the important work AbilityPLUS is doing on the hill.

We depend on your support to provide people with disabilities the opportunity to improve their lives through sports participation. The kindness and generosity of everyone at Mount Snow and throughout the Deerfield Valley have a deeply positive impact on the lives of many people, in many ways. We can’t thank you enough.

Sincerely,

Sue Tatem, AbilityPLUS Inc. Executive Director of Programs
