WinDART is the Windham County chapter of VDART, which supports a network of chartered regional DART teams throughout the state. “WinDART is regional and fairly new,” said Joanne Bourbeau, the chair of WinDART.
Bourbeau said WinDART provides shelter and food to pets following disasters, both natural and man-made. “After Irene we had a temporary shelter for displaced pets,” said Bourbeau. “We sheltered pets for several weeks and provided pet food.”
Bourbeau said the group is made up of volunteers and as it receives no state or federal funding, relies solely on donations and is seeking appropriations from each of the towns it serves, including Windham, Wilmington, Guilford, Newfane, and Dover.
Vice chair Vicki Capitani said the typical process is for groups seeking new appropriations to petition for a warned article at Town Meeting. “Even though it’s a small amount of money, it’s an important program to let the voters know about,” said Capitani.
“You also stand a chance to get more (than $250) if someone wants to amend from the floor (at Town Meeting),” said chair Josh Cohen. “So I see no reason not to do that.”
The board asked the group to send a representative to Town Meeting to answer questions from the public if necessary.
