The Gathering Place’s Deerfield Valley location will be open from 8 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday.
The new location will offer all the same services as the center’s Brattleboro location, which include individualized care; nursing oversight; nutritious meals; chronic disease management; prevention and health maintenance; on-site physical and other therapies; coordination of transportation; podiatry; and salon services. Some of the therapeutic activities offered at the center include tai chi, art and music, and life skills such as baking and gardening.
Mary Fredette, executive director of The Gathering Place, says that the benefits of the new location are numerous. “This location is our first choice because it’s a single level and it’s ground level,” says Fredette. “Having it be ground level and all on one floor is a beautiful, beautiful thing.”
Additionally, the location has easy access for the bus. The Gathering Place has contracts with Southern Vermont Transportation, which includes the MOOver and the Current.
“The new location has great bus access and a place for the bus to turn around,” says Fredette.
Another benefit to the new location is its size. “The center will likely serve 45 to 50 people daily,” says Fredette. “We had originally looked at a location that would have served a maximum of 30 a day. I’m very pleased that this location will be able to serve more, because we’ve heard that there are many people (in the valley) who have always been interested in using the center but weren’t willing to make the trip to Brattleboro each day.”
Fredette says that the center needs to raise $200,000 for its new location, which is in addition to the $25,000 already committed to the center from Wilmington. In May, Fredette spoke to the Dover Selectboard about whether they may be able to contribute funds as well.
At the time, vice chair Victoria Capitani asked Fredette to return once she had a better sense of where the center would be located and what programs it will offer.
Planned adjustments to the existing First Wok space include the establishment of five suitable personal care areas and two walk-in showers. The Gathering Place also plans to revamp the restaurant’s kitchen.
Pre-enrollment for the center’s Deerfield Valley location will begin September 1, and those who are interested in enrolling may contact the Brattleboro location. The Gathering Place can be reached by phone at (802) 254-6559.
“We’re happy to have people who are interested in the Deerfield Valley location come to our Brattleboro location to take a tour,” says Fredette. “It’s a different location, but the premise is the same.”
