“To get the whole $175,000 we have to spend, I think it’s $221,000, because we have to pay 20%,” selectboard member Brad Rafus said.
Lewis Sumner said the Legislature put more money into the grant program, which enabled Halifax to receive the full paving grant. The board plans to have 1.2 miles of Branch Road paved, which is estimated to cost a total of about $225,000. Since there is some money left over in the budget, Sumner suggested paving slightly more than the 1.2 miles.
“My way of looking at it is, if a little bit beyond (the 1.2 miles) is bad, I’d go a little bit farther and use the money up,” Sumner said.
Rafus agreed, saying that to “get the worst” of the road approximately 1.45 miles will need to be paved.
The structure grant is for $50,000 and will be used to replace the deck on the Deer Park Road bridge.
“We weren’t expecting the structure grant, but we got it,” Sumner said.
The landfill at the town garage needs a renewal of its post-closure certification this year. Homeowners within a 500-foot radius of the landfill will be sent notices.
“Our certification for the landfill is running out,” Sumner said. “We didn’t think we’d have to renew it, but then the PFCs came up.” Sumner said the issue of contamination is happening in a lot of places now, so other towns will be continuing to go through the same process.
Robbin Gabriel said the certification period is 10 years.
