WILMINGTON- What do Bach, “Tosca,” Smith College of Art, and the Keene Swamp Bats have in common? They are all scheduled to be enjoyed by a newly-formed Culture Club at St. Mary’s in the Mountains.

The events and activities are open to anyone and have no religious significance.

The first event will take place on Monday, May 12, at 5:30 pm, at St. Mary’s in the Mountains 13 East Main Street, and will feature local Bach expert Gordon Jones, who will speak about Bach’s music, Bach’s love of dance, etc. There will be some music demonstrations and conversation.

Jones, of Putney, has made a lifetime study of the music of Bach, working for several years on the Bach keyboard repertoire with harpsichord virtuoso Edith Kilbuck in Portland, OR. A citizen of the UK, he trained in the English cathedral tradition, most recently as a tenor lay clerk at Bristol Cathedral. He is the author of “Bach’s Choral Music: A Listener’s Guide” (2009: Amadeus Press).  Jones is a member of the fine arts faculty at the Putney School where he teaches painting and drawing. He is also on the Brattleboro Music Center’s Board of Trustees.

Then on Friday, May 30, the Culture Club will meet at St. Mary’s at 6:30 pm, and travel to the Latchis Theatre to see the Brattleboro Music Center’s production of Puccini’s opera “Tosca,” as performed by the Windham Orchestra and regional singers.

Outings to see a Keene Swamp Bats baseball game and a visit to the Smith College of Art are also in the works. Stay tuned for future details.
