In response to the article in the paper about the Vermont Dept of Corrections being over budget and needing $1.5 million to get through December, there is no good answer to the problem. Criminals and prisons are both a result of our society. The culture we live in creates criminals and then they must be jailed to protect that same society they came from. Rehabilitation starts with early childhood intervention in the form of intensive family therapy. Preventing crime is clearly the best option. In the meantime while we wrestle with the problem, let’s try to be more humane to people in jails and allow them to change their ways so they can re-enter society. Jesus Christ forgave criminals and took pity on them. We all need to follow his example, especially at Christmas.
