Come for a vacation, leave with a citation

To the Editor,

Again, we see another big event weekend or holiday and again, we see our police department out in full force even before 7 am, pulling cars over heading for the Tough Mudder. This town has been known as the place to come on vacation, leave with a citation, for over 20 years. As business owners we keep spending on advertisements and coming up with ideas to bring people to the area so we can try to make a living in a resort town. We all depend on these people coming to town. I have always believed that word of mouth is the best advertisement.

Well guess what? There isn’t very good word of mouth. People say that they have a great time but it is ruined by being pulled over for no apparent reason. Our business this summer has been getting calls from people staying in Killington wanting to know the best and quickest way to get to the farm. They also say they used to stay in this valley, but they are tired of running the gauntlet in this area.

I know that by writing this letter that I will be a marked man by the S.S. Nazi Regime (Wilmington Police Department), but I don’t believe we can wait for Town Meeting to make changes.

We pay the police department to serve and protect, not harass and torment. Now, I understand that the chief has had a problem with the Deerfield Valley Farmers’ Day Fair about the truck pull and fireworks. If you want to have any fun, the chief wants to put a stop to it.

Signed: Sick of the abuse and harassment.
