Grammy winner to perform

BELLOWS FALLS-On Friday, July 12, at 7:30 pm, four-time Grammy-winning cellist Eugene Friesen teams up with pianist extraordinaire Joel A. Martin to explore the acoustics of the “Stone Church,” the Immanuel Episcopal Church, 20 Church Street. The concert will meld Friesen’s innovative artistry on the cello with Martin’s trademark “jazzical” approach in music from Brazil, Europe, and America.

The concert, presented by Stone Church Arts and Sonoterra, is the first of two public concerts taking place as part of the Vermont Improvisation Intensive being held in Bellows Falls, July 11 to 14.

The Intensive, directed by Friesen, draws professional musical artists from all over the world for three days of study, group exercises, discussion, and improvising. The second public event, on Saturday, July 13, at 7:30 pm, will feature participants from the Intensive on violin, cello, piano, and voice, performing original compositions and improvisations.

Friesen is an active internationally as a concert artist, composer, conductor, and teacher who has worked and recorded with such diverse artists as Dave Brubeck, Toots Thielemans, Betty Buckley, Will Ackerman, Joe Lovano, and Dream Theater.

Martin is an award-winning concert and jazz pianist who has performed his innovative Jazzical compositions, as well as jazz and classical pieces, both domestically and in Paris, London, Finland, Germany, Switzerland, Japan, Russia, and Kyrgyzstan.

Admission for the July 12 concert is $17 for adults ($13 for seniors and children under 12) in advance and $20 ($15) at the door. Admission on July 13 is free.
