WARDSBORO- Mortan A. “Mort” Davis, 79, of Wardsboro, formerly of Spofford, NH, and Brattleboro, died Wednesday morning, May 8, at Applewood Care and Rehab Center in Winchester, NH, with his family at his side following a period of declining health.

Mr. Davis was born in Brattleboro on August 1, 1933, the fourth child of Mortan A. and Elsie (Reome) Davis. He was raised and educated in both Wardsboro and Brattleboro. While attending St. Michael Parochial School he enjoyed basketball, drama, and choir at the church.

There was seldom a time when Mr. Davis was not employed after leaving school early to help his family. He often said that his favorite way to pass the time was running his backhoe during the 30 years that he owned and operated Mort’s Artesians Well Drilling based in Spofford. More recently he was employed at the Recycling Center in Wardsboro, planting flowers and offering small treats to all the townspeople for recycling, especially the children. During his retirement years he spent many hours keeping his gardens and lawn in beautiful condition.

Mr. Davis was a member of the American Legion and Brattleboro Post #5, V.F.W., where he would often share a song, and for several years was a volunteer with the Brattleboro Fire Department.

Of his leisure time activities he enjoyed visiting with family, singing country music, hunting, fishing, playing horseshoes, softball and cards. He was a skilled pingpong player.

On July 14, 1951, in Brattleboro, he was married to June I. Guerin, who survives. Besides his faithful and loving wife of 61 years he leaves three daughters, Kathryn Brown (husband Dale Sr.) and Carol Mackey, both of Spofford, Nina McCulloch (husband Garry), of Pembroke, two sons, Mortan A. Davis, III, of Wardsboro, and Verne W. Davis, of Colchester, three sisters, Ella Barber (husband Louie), of Ruston, LA, Sr. Shirley Davis, SSJ, of Rutland, and Bette Parent, of Spofford, one brother, Elmer Davis Sr. (wife Helen), of Spofford, two sisters-in-law Mary Davis, of Spofford, and Cheryl Davis, of Roanoke, VA.

Other survivors include 13 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, two great great grandchildren, and many friends and relatives.

He was predeceased by one daughter, Elsie Davis, one granddaughter, Tricia Brown, one sister Elsie, and four brothers, Kenneth, Robert, Paul Sr., and Irvin, who died at birth.

In keeping with Mr. Davis’ final wishes there are no formal funeral services scheduled. Committal rites and burial in the Davis family lot in Saint Michael’s Cemetery will be conducted at a later date. A celebration of his life will be held May 18 at 2 pm in Spofford at the home of his daughter, Carol Mackey.

Memorial contributions in Mr. Davis’ name may be made to St Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
