JACKSONVILLE- Richard S. “Bummy” Allen, 78 of Allen Road died unexpectedly Wednesday morning, October 17, at his home.

Mr. Allen was born at home in Jacksonville on December 9, 1933 the son of Myron “Mike” and Wilhelmina “Billy” (Aherns) Allen. He was raised and educated in Jacksonville and was a graduate of Whitingham High School, Class of 1952.

He lived on the family farm his entire life while self-employed as a truck driver for over 30 years. Later he worked for several business in the valley. Mr. Allen drove a school bus and had a rural mail route from Jacksonville to the Charlemont. For the past 20 years, he took care of summer homes within the Jacksonville/Whitingham area. For several years he served as superintendent of the annual Deerfield Valley Farmers’ Day Fair in Wilmington. Everyone in the valley knew him as “Bummy.”

Active civically, he was a member for several years of the Jacksonville Cemetery Commission, held membership in the Whitingham Lions Club, and had been a member of the Vermont Co-Op Electrical Company.

Mr. Allen was a member and served as a trustee of the Halifax Union Society and was active with the Jacksonville Community Church where he was baptized as well as married on May 1, 1955 to his wife Caroline Smith, who survives.

During his earlier years he played baseball in the town league and later in the local men’s softball league.

He enjoyed following and attending his grandchildren’s sporting events, vacations to the coast of Maine with his family, and looked forward every year to the sugaring season. He and his wife also enjoyed being members of the Greenmountain Square Dance.

A devoted family man he also cherished time shared with his family and friends.

Besides his loving and devoted wife of 57 years, he leaves two sons, Keith Allen and wife Jenni, of Norman, OK, and Scott Allen and wife Jayne, of Jacksonville; one daughter, Christine Block and her husband Travis, of Jacksonville; one brother, David Allen, of Jacksonville; three sisters, Mary Louise Rauschenback, of CT, Stella Stevens, of Jacksonville, and Harriet Maynard, of Wilmington; his five grandchildren, Kasi and Derek Allen, Amanda and Travis Hardgrove, and Jack Allen; and one great-granddaughter, Lailee Stone. Additionally, he leaves many nieces and nephews and a special second cousin Tracey Reed. He was predeceased by one brother, Myron Allen Jr.

A memorial service in celebration of his life was conducted Tuesday, October 23, at 11 am at the Jacksonville Community Church. Burial in Jacksonville Cemetery will be private for the immediate family only at a future date.
