Tenth Mountain Division veterans to be celebrated

DOVER- Veterans of the 10th Mountain Division, 85th Regiment, will gather Thursday December 6, at 5 pm, at the Dover Forge Restaurant to mingle and reminisce. Newcomb Eldredge, of Newport, NH, and Frank Smith, of East Dover, will be on hand to share stories of their experiences while assigned to Americas first “Mountain Ski Troops.”

The 1996 film “Fire on the Mountain, the Story of the Men of 10th Mountain Division” will also be shown. All veterans, active service members, ski patrollers, and interested persons are welcome to attend.

The 85th regiment saw heavy combat during World War II in the Della-Torraccia region of the Appenine Mountains in northern ltaly. The division led the assault on Mount Belvedere during that campaign.

Not only did the 10th Mountain Division play a key role in World War II, but many of the returning soldiers went on to become pioneers in the then-new ski industry. More than 30 ended up in the National Ski Hall of Fame. But they’ll mostly be remembered for revolutionizing mountain warfare for the US army. It came at a cost. Of the 19,780 men who served in the 10th Mountain Division, 4,866 became casualties, 975 were killed, 3,817 wounded, and 20 taken prisoner. Despite seeing active duty for just four months, the 10th Mountain Division suffered the greatest casualty rate per month of all the other infantry divisions in Italy. The division was deactivated in 1945. It was reactivated from 1948-58 for the Korean War and the Cold War. It would not be until 1985 that the 10th was again reactivated as the 10th Mountain Division and stationed at Fort Drum, NY.

The Dover Forge Restaurant and G. Housen Distribution will hold a special wine tasting in conjunction with this reunion.

Wine, from the Deutsch Family Wine and Spirits vineyards, and appetizers will be offered at $25 per person, $10 of which will be donated to the Wounded Warrior Project, in honor of the 10th Mountain Division’s service to the country, then and now. Everyone is welcome whether or not they participate in the tasting.
