To the Editor,

The Twin Valley school budget vote will occur on Wednesday, April 12. Voters in Whitingham will vote at the Municipal Center from 10 am to 7 pm. Voters in Wilmington will vote at Twin Valley Elementary School from 7 am to 7 pm.

The Whitingham, Wilmington, and Twin Valley School Boards are asking you to support this budget, which is $815,861 less than the budget approved last year. The reduced budget is the result of several factors including state mandated shifting of programs to the Supervisory Union budget, and a reduction in various budget line items as recommended by school administration and approved by the board.

We understand that even though we are recommending this reduced budget amount, it is still a challenge for local taxpayers if you are outside of the income sensitivity protection. Under the current Vermont education funding law, a reduced school budget does not always benefit the taxpayer. We feel very strongly the current school funding mechanism needs drastic change. We are actively working with the select boards in Whitingham and Wilmington in an effort to craft a plan to challenge the education funding laws that negatively affect rural schools across Vermont.

We are presenting this budget in support of our Twin Valley students, staff, administration and programming. Our students are thriving. Our staff and administration are strong and stable. We are a small school system that offers a wide variety of opportunities for our students. The relationships between our staff, students, parents and our community are vibrant. Our facilities are modern and in top shape. Our Twin Valley Schools are important to our towns and are a critical component of the local economic viability of the Deerfield Valley.

We are asking for your support by voting to approve the Twin Valley school budget on April 12. If you have any questions or need more information there will be two budget informational meetings; on April 6, at Twin Valley Elementary School in Wilmington and April 11, at Twin Valley Middle High School in Whitingham. Both meetings will begin at 7 pm. We look forward to your participation.

Seth Boyd

On behalf of the Whitingham, Wilmington and Twin Valley School Boards
