WARDSBORO- Gladys C. Bruce, 94, the town’s oldest lifelong resident, died Tuesday, February 4, at Grace Cottage Hospital in Townshend, surrounded by her loved ones. She was born January 3, 1920, in South Wardsboro, daughter of Herbert and Carrie Reed. On September 2, 1940, she married Warren Bruce who predeceased her November 15, 1995.

An active member of the South Wardsboro Congregational Church, the Home Demonstration Group, and the Sewing Circle, she loved fine needlecrafts and hooking rugs. With a talent for remembering detailed history she provided information for a documentary on the Wardsboro Gilfeather turnip. She shared many wonderful memories from her youth with family and friends. Mrs. Bruce also loved spending time caring for her beloved animals and tending gardens on the farm in South Wardsboro.

A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, she leaves behind her three daughters, Marjorie Massey, of Chester, Gloria Hart, and Janet LeBlond, with her husband Robert, of South Wardsboro; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held February 22 at 11 am in the Wardsboro Methodist Church, Main Street; a reception will follow at the town hall. Peter Carlson and Mark Griffin will be officiating. There are no calling hours. There will be a private burial in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Grace Cottage Hospital, Wardsboro Rescue, or the South Wardsboro Congregational Church.
