SHREWSBURY, MA- Mrs. Betsey Jean (Thayer) Wetherbee, 70, died November 17, at UMass Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. She was born February 26, 1942, in Brattleboro, daughter of the late Webster and Maxine (Sargent) Thayer, and grew up in South Newfane. In 1962 she married Sherman S. Wetherbee, who survives. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in August.

A member of St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, Mrs. Wetherbee loved her church and serving on the Vestry and several committees. She loved spending time with her family and babysitting for her grandchildren. Her rescue shelties, Kasey and Penelope, were special to her. She loved long rides in the country, especially in their Model T. Along with her husband, she was a member of the Central Massachusetts Model T Ford Club. Some of her favorite things were trying new recipes, picnics, brown bag concerts, crossword puzzles, word puzzles, and Sudoku. Mrs. Wetherbee was happiest when she was helping and caring for others.

Mrs. Wetherbee graduated from Brattleboro High School in 1960, earning a Silver B, the school’s honor society symbol. After graduating from New England Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing in 1963, She had a long career as an RN including 35-plus years caring for patients at St. Vincent’s Hospital. She was also proud of her long time involvement with the Women’s Health Initiative. Her time last year serving on a grand jury was rewarding for her. Mrs. Wetherbee was happiest when she was helping others.

Besides her husband, she leaves three sons, Royal and wife, Toi, of Shrewsbury, Matthew and wife, Rebecca, of Worcester, and Mark and wife, Pati, of Stockton Springs, ME; grandchildren, Bia, Wendy, Wesley, John, and wife Alissa, Christopher, Alyssa, and Daniel; and great-grandchildren, Aiden and Rylan. She also leaves her sister, Mary Towne, of Wilmington, VT; brothers William Thayer, of Westford, and George and wife, Blanche Thayer, of Halifax, VT; six nieces, a nephew; and 19 grand-nieces and grand-nephews; as well as cousins and aunt Natalie Bruce of Florida.

The family will receive family and friends from 12:30 to 2 pm on Sunday, December 2, at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church 695 Southbridge Street, Worcester, followed by a memorial service at 2 pm. Burial will be private at the convenience of her family.
