The event was held at two venues, Windmill Stables in St. Albans and Missisquoi Valley Union High School in Swanton. The 4-H’ers competed by age group with different questions and skills tests for each group.
The judging portion of hippology is designed to test participants ability to place horses in conformation and performance classes.
For the exam and stations the 4-H’ers respond to questions, and perform tasks relating to tack and equipment, anatomy, confirmation, feeds and nutrition, breeds, and horse care, among other topics.
Scores from both contests are combined to determine final overall scores. The top 10 scorers in each age group receive rosette ribbons.
The four highest scoring seniors, ages 14 and older, also earn spots on the Vermont 4-H Horse Hippology Team that will compete this fall in regional and national competition.
