To the Editor,

Positives first: LED light bulbs last much longer than regular bulbs and use less electricity.

It was very thoughtful of the chamber of commerce to obtain a grant to lower the cost of those light bulbs for our valley residents.

My wife and I went through the house, counting light bulbs we would replace. Arriving at the chamber to fill out an application and pay, their LED bulbs looked a bit strange, and we returned home and looked up that brand on the Internet. All LED light bulbs are not equal, and unfortunately, Sylvania bulbs that we are being offered are among the lowest rated.

Amazon gives them only three stars, due to negative comments by users. For example: “Tried in several fixtures. Very definite buzzing noise. If you have bad hearing these are probably the bulbs for you. But to me it’s like a crowd of mosquitoes in my head. Nasty electric mosquitoes.” Another comment: “At full power there is only a very faint buzzing, but when I dim the bulbs about halfway the buzzing gets noticeably louder. I got these bulbs for free from my local power utility and am glad I didn’t spend money on them. As LEDs continue to fall in price I will be looking to replace them.”

Another website, LED-light-review.com gives Sylvania LED bulb its lowest rating (1 out of 5) for light quality and an overall rating of only 2 out of 5. It concludes: “Nothing about this bulb will fit comfortably in a domestic setting. The outrageous design could be overlooked if the light quality of the 78907 was something to write home about. It isn’t.”

We decided not to get these bulbs but wait until better bulbs come down in price.
