The “stars of the show” are full rotisserie chickens that come at just under four pounds a bird. Each bird is seasoned, but the rotisserie does all the work, Windell said, making the chickens juicy and delicious. Along with a whole chicken to take home, the meals include a selection of salads and sides that change weekly. A few examples of sides that have recently been offered include fingerling potatoes with basil pesto, watermelon and feta salad, kale and farro salad, and Caesar salad with homemade dressing.
These meals are perfect for taking on a picnic, and convenient for the nights you want to stay at home but don’t feel like cooking.
“We love to ski, and at the end of the day the last thing you want to do is cook or go out to dinner,” Windell said.
All ingredients are as local and organic as possible, Windell said, with products coming from local businesses like Blue Mountain Produce and the farmers’ market in Brattleboro. “We have really good, quality ingredients,” Windell said. “We’re proud of every meal.”
Even the packaging is compostable and recyclable.
“We go to great lengths to make sure we’re not harming the environment,” Windell said. The Nutmeg Food Truck can be found when you enter the west entrance to The Nutmeg and drive into the lower parking lot. The property runs next to the river, and the lawn and picnic tables make for a great location for a picnic. Windell said a fire pit is currently being built and there are hopes to eventually put in a playground.
A selection of wine and beer is available to go along with your meal, all of which Windell said are moderately priced. For dessert you can try the homemade panna cotta, and ice cream will also soon be available.
The Nutmeg Food Truck recently drove to Brattleboro to attend Strolling of the Heifers, but Windell said traveling for events won’t be a priority in the future. She wants customers to know that if they want to pick up a meal during the food truck’s normal business hours, they can always count on it being open.
“Our loyalty is to our Wilmington and Dover customers,” Windell said.
Windell has high hopes for business in the winter, hoping to attract snowmobilers as well as people coming from the mountain after a day of skiing. A snowmobile trail runs right by The Nutmeg, making it an easy location for snowmobilers to make a pit stop for lunch. They can warm up by the fire pit and enjoy warm side dishes. Windell said the sides in winter will include more soups than salads to go along with the rotisserie chickens.
Windell said she wants to keep expanding the menu, providing fresh and new options for customers. Recently is was the addition of ribs to the menu, something Windell wants to see as a permanent item customers can order.
Since opening, Windell said the response and feedback have been wonderful. “People are still getting to know us,” Windell said, but she is happy to say she has seen some repeat customers.
“We hope people will love it,” Windell said. “We’ve put our heart and soul into it.”
The Nutmeg Food Truck opens at 4 pm on Fridays and Saturdays and noon on Sundays, and closes when food runs out. Windell said hours during the summer will be extended. Follow The Nutmeg Food Truck on Instagram at “thenutmegfoodtruck.”
