Even without the concert, residents were very giving

To the Editor,

Due to circumstances beyond our control, the Deerfield Valley Food Pantry’s annual December concert had to be canceled. This concert, developed and produced by Skip Morrow and Gary Henry over a number of years, is our organization’s major fundraiser and has become one of the highlights of the holiday season in Wilmington. Its cancellation obviously had the potential of adversely affecting our fundraising efforts. However, this being the Deerfield Valley, it galvanized our friends in the community to come work with us to make sure the food pantry would be able to meet our neighbors’ food needs.

There are so many people who rallied around to work with us to make up the loss of the concert. Many of the folks who attend our concert bring a donation of canned goods, which we use to stock the shelves. We decided to continue this practice. Randy Schoonmaker of the MOOver graciously supplied us with a bus that we used as a prop to encourage food donations. Morrow came to our aid by providing delightful posters, in his justly-famous style, to help publicize our efforts and Shaw’s Supermarket provided us with a place to park the bus in its parking lot as well as donating numerous cases of canned vegetables. We were able to fill the bus to overflowing and keep the shelves fully stocked in January. Some of our most ardent supporters are the youngest members of our community. A number of area schools conducted food drives to benefit the food pantry.

The Deerfield Valley Food Pantry deeply appreciates the generosity of everyone who helped to continue to meet food needs in the valley. If anyone reading this letter is in need of food assistance or knows someone who is, our pantry is open to serve the community on the third Saturday of each month as well as the Thursday before. Our phone number is (802) 464-0417.
