BENNINGTON- Eleanor Elizabeth Meisner, 93, formerly of Long Island, NY, peacefully died on Tuesday, September 24, of pneumonia. She was born May 26, 1920, the second child of Anthony and Anna (Gabriel) Gruler, and was educated in New York. During World War II she was employed in a defense plant, where she met Charles Meisner, whom she married in 1946.

They had one daughter, Carol Lynn, who was the delight of their lives, and loved taking her with them on their many travels through this country, and finally on their dream anniversary trip to Europe, when she was 8 years old. While planning that trip, Carol Lynn insisted on bringing her constant companion, a bedraggled stuffed toy dog she named Lady Dog, whose loose head and tattered fur made it an embarrassment to her Daddy until Grandma Meisner knitted a suit to hold it together as it traveled across Europe in a little shopping bag.

Mrs. Meisner truly enjoyed her role as homemaker, and was a very skilled dressmaker, and loved making beautiful clothes for herself and their daughter, as well as drapes, slipcovers, and other home furnishings. She was a particularly good cook and baker, relishing the treats of the holidays, and took great pleasure in immersing herself as a holiday salesgirl in Macy’s Department Store in Manhattan, just to experience the excitement of the hustle and bustle of the Christmas season.

Mrs. Meisner is survived by her dearly loved Carol Lynn Williams and her husband Vince Paul Williams; and her three much-loved grandchildren, Christopher Anthony, Victoria Lynn, and Vince Andrew. Also surviving is her devoted sister, Marilyn Ward, whom she helped raise while a young teenager when their mother was very ill, and their father was distraught trying to restore his wife’s health. They would take her little sister to the circus and rodeo and ice skating to give their mother some needed respite.

Also surviving are Mrs. Meisner’s niece and godchild, Geraldine Ann Baker; her three daughters, Gail Leggett, Donna Skurja, and Ann Baker, and their children, and many cousins. Funeral services were held on Thursday, October 3, at St. Margaret’s Roman Catholic Church, in Middle Village, NY, with interment in St. John’s Cemetery in the family plot with her husband Charles, grandparents, and parents, an aunt and uncle, and Carol Lynn and Vince’s infant daughter. Mr. Meisner died in 1995. Their brother, Edward, died in 1989.

A memorial service will be held in Wilmington at a date to be announced.

Memorial gifts may be made to St. Agnes Senior Group – Recreation Fund in care of Covey Allen & Shea Funeral Home, PO Box 215, Wilmington, VT 05363.
