To the Editor,

This was a very challenging winter for many of us in the Deerfield Valley. A number of exceptionally cold days and nights caused us to use far more fuel, wood, pellets, etc. than we normally would. Costs went up accordingly, and for periods of time, even if you had the money, there were shortages of some supplies such as dry firewood and wood pellets. These problems were reflected in the amount of help that the state was asked to provide, and in the number of calls for help the DVCC received just within this valley.

During this past winter the DVCC provided fuel assistance for 98 families. That assistance cost us $88,875.53. That is $25,000 more than we have ever had to spend in the 10 years since our fund was started. We were only able to provide this help because many of our generous donors were alert enough to recognize the problem and increase their donations. We would not have gotten through the winter if it weren’t for the members of the Propane Dover fuel-buying group Those people have been helping us for three years and this year alone, they contributed $34,775 to our fund to help their neighbors in the valley.

To those of you who have helped us raise money during the past 10 years, we are so very grateful. There have been years when we ran out of funds before the end of the heating season.

Thankfully, because of your generosity, we were able to help most of the people who needed it during this winter. We are very fortunate to live in a place where, when someone needs a little help , there are so many good people ready to step up and offer that help. That doesn’t happen everywhere.

We wish you a warm and comfortable summer - hopefully arriving very soon.

Very truly yours,

Carolyn DiLeo, Ginny Kuhnert, and Sue Spengler
