BBA sophomores give back to community

To the Editor,

On Thursday, May 16, Burr and Burton Academy sophomores spent the day throughout the Northshire giving back to their community for their annual service learning day.

I want to thank Mark Tashjian sincerely for sending a team of sophomores to Maple Street for this very important day. His students and faculty member Mike Caraco accomplished some extraordinary work. They helped us to build a new compost system and to design self-watering systems for part of our new agricultural curriculum. This included buying wood, downloading plans, asking the shop teacher if the plans would work, rolling yards of soil, tools, measuring a very ambitious project.

The students and Mr. Caraco went above and beyond, also helping with landscaping and anything we asked. What was even more noticeable was how the students “held themselves.” Each of these sophomores were role models and the Maple Street students watched their every move, witnessing commitment, dedication, and care. This was particularly true for the eighth graders, who watched closely to get an understanding of how high schoolers are supposed to act, and the BBA students were respectful and kind.

It was clearly a day when the BBA mission, to educate its students intellectually and morally for a life of responsibility, integrity, and service, was in action. Thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule to give back, which inspired all the students at Maple Street School to find ways they too can give back.
