To the Editor:

I would like to thank Jack Deming for spending time with the Twin Valley Pride Group last week and for writing such a great article about the important work they doing on preventing exposure to second- hand smoke.

I want to acknowledge the members of the group that were unable to be present for the photo: Hannah Swanson, Cade Nesbitt, Colin Lozito, Nick Nilsen, and Lauren Sumner. I am so proud of all the members of this group. They are wonderful role models for their peers and I feel very fortunate to work with them.

In addition, I wanted to make a clarification on one thing.

When the students visit the Vermont Statehouse, they go there to present information on various issues. The goal is to educate the legislators on why the issue is important to them. At no time are the students lobbying or asking legislators to vote on a particular bill. This is prohibited by our funding.

We are grateful to be able to continue the Pride Program’s Second Hand Smoke Campaign as part of an OVX (Our Voices Exposed) Grant from Vermont Department of Health as well as a Tobacco Use Prevention Grant from the Vermont Department of Education. This funding allows these students to encourage their peers to make healthy decisions and make a difference in their community.
